5.7 Crisis management - Volkswagen, Tesla & Toyota
Contingency planning

09/09 Monday
In class:
  • Collect signed syllabus statement
  • My Word
  • NPV quiz

Homework:
  • Choice

09/10 Tuesday (Period 5)
In class:
  • Together, we will choose three companies who are direct competitors, to study. This study will be a collaborative effort that centers on comparing and contrasting the financials through the lens of our IB learning objectives. From this "center-point", student teams will analyze reasons for such results and evaluate specific strategies by making connections to non-financial learning objectives.
    • We will utilize the wall in the class to build a visual understanding of our learning
    • Determine single method of resource organization (One Note, Google, etc.)
    • Establish company, functional teams, objectives, timeline, assessments
    • Teams assign research goals in anticipation of Thursday's class
    • The beginning point is to evaluate company financials

Homework:
  • Choice

09/12 Thursday
In Class:
  • Company research work period
    • Students will research their companies to find as many relevant issues/connections (news) into our curriculum about their company recording them on Post It's for further analysis
    • Students will receive financial statements from teacher for analysis on Friday.
Homework:
  • Choice

09/13 Friday
In class:
  • Individual, silent, wall walk taking notes on observations and common themes.
  • Group discussion of common themes from all three companies for us to drill in to including areas of the syllabus that are affected.
  • Teams will then select a single theme to begin a deep dive leading to our next steps and ultimately a CUEGIS essay.
  • Teams will determine discrete areas per member to source, read and summarize and present on Monday
    • Deliverable: An article or other source (video, podcast, etc.) loaded into each teams electronic workbook to support our whole class discussion
  • Review Formula Sheet and develop historical trends from online sources (not calculated from re-crafted statements into IB format, as planned)
  • Tookey video (7m)

Homework:
  • Company research on the prompt: "Evaluate the effect of public relations strategies at Volkswagen, Tesla and Toyota."
  • Team leaders will establish a google doc for each member to load their resource and a brief analysis of that source as it relates to our prompt.
  • Team leaders are responsible for communicating to their absent members their responsibility/deliverable.
  • What is analysis and evaluation in IB Business?
    • What is analysis? Do the DEED! (due Monday in Google doc and prepared to discuss)?
      • Define key terms
      • Explain the theory
      • Examples (real world)
      • Development to ensure you have answered the question
    • What is evaluation? Take DEED and CLASPP it together! (Not due Monday, rather, we will utilize Monday's work to move in to this step):
      • Conclusions
      • Long-term and short term consequences
      • Any weaknesses
      • Stakeholder impacts
      • Priorities
      • Pros and cons
9/16 Monday
In Class:
  • One team at a time will discuss their key leanings and connect them to our content. Students not presenting will take notes in their Google doc under their name. In addition to notes, students should identify syllabus connections and develop open ended questions for the class. Each group will present for ~15m.
Homework:
  • Students will provide a reflection of the in class process

09/17 Tuesday
In Class:
  • We learn best when we can relate to current examples. In getting 35 people to move in a common direction it is typical that the process of storming, forming and norming will occur. Providing exact instructions will never be the norm in your future so learning to cope with ambiguity is essential. (10m)
    • Reflection points (10m):
      • Reflecting on your "internal self" and what was going on "around you", both physically and virtually, what impacted you, positively, negatively or otherwise in this process to date?
      • Describe your ability to be "truly present" during each of the three phases of our work, including the initial development, the research and the presentation.
      • Evaluate your level of protectiveness in asking questions to gain clarity and take ownership to solve your ambiguity?
      • Summarize how this change (learning method), where you had unanswered questions and unknown expectations, could prepare you for success outside of the confines of what is typically a highly structured environment (school).
  • Read Crisis Management Chapter and outline key points (30m)
  • Group students in teams of six, two from each of our selected company's, to extend the discussion of Crisis Management. (30m)
    • Add to your notes in the Google doc, but remain focused on verbal and listening engagement. This is a skill, so be patient with the change.
      • One measure of success will include the application of CM concepts in your discussion applying your new learning from the textbook work.

Homework:
  • Leveraging off of your research and your DEED work, prepare a six paragraph write up (one for each of the "evaluation" CLASPP elements) for one of the crisis issue from your company. Do not rewrite your DEED work here, this is the next step, the evaluation.

9/19 Thursday
In Class:
  • I didn’t give a specific due date for the paragraphs. But this work should support your ability to write a targeted individualized CUEGIS prompt in class today and also develop an outline for that prompt. Both done in class. The end game is to write an essay in class on Friday with no resources.
  • Develop your own, individual CUEGIS essay prompt for teacher approval. Include two CUEGIS elements and the term crisis management (finish by EOP).
  • Construct an outline based on our structure (finished by EOP).
    • Google doc for prompt and outline
    • CUEGIS graphic
  • To hit the top end of the mark scheme you will have to apply the terminology and concepts of crisis management from our learning objective in 5.7:
    • Explain and evaluate the factors that affect effective crisis management including transparency, communication, speed and control
Homework:
  • Choice

    • This will be scored in the gradebook
