12/2 Monday
In class:
  • We will have a Socratic seminar on Thursday and Friday to look into the future of the job market and the connection to (un)employment. We will have three groups of 10 students, each discussing their views and research, two on Thursday and one on Friday. The last 25 minutes of Friday will be used to take a multiple choice assessment on the chapter content. Individually, students will develop their views in order to discuss several of the below elements inside the two LO's in a meaningful, insightful way:
    • LO: Discuss possible economic consequences of employment trends on things such as GDP, tax revenues, increased cost of government intervention, individual incomes, and disparities in the distribution of income.
    • LO: Discuss possible personal and social consequences of employment trends on things such as crime rates, stress levels, mental health, indebtedness, homelessness and family breakdown.
    • Seminar reading suggestions. This is NOT your research, but a beginning point:
      • The future of work employment outlook (OECD 2019)
      • The alarming employment trends that the jobs report won't tell you (CNN 10/19)
      • The economic consequences of automation (Project Syndicate 9/19)
      • Automation and unemployment: Help is on the way (Vox 12/18)
      • Will robots and AI take your job? The economic and political consequences of automation. (Brookings 4/18)
      • Jobs lost, jobs gained: What the future of work will mean for jobs, skills, and wages (McKinsey 11/17)
  • Students will turn in a typed bullet list of research points including sources that will clearly indicate the depth of their research and the connectivity to the above LO's. At the end of this list provide a 200 word reflection of your personal view of the future world of work and your ability to adapt.
  • Action for the day: Read provided sources and develop notes to be turned in with additional research from other sources. These notes may take any form, but it is suggested that you keep the seminar points in mind.
Specifically, economic, personal and social consequences of the future labor market.
